Retired Charleston Police officer identified in deadly Huger crash

HUGER, S.C. (WCBD) – A retired Charleston Police Officer is dead after a car collided with a tree Monday night in the Huger area.

According to Cainhoy Fire and Rescue, several crews were dispatched to a crash at the intersection of Halfway Creek Road and Guerins Bridge Road at 9:17 p.m.

South Carolina Highway Patrol says a Lexus was traveling east on Halfway Creek Road when it ran off the road and struck a tree.

The driver, identified as Retired Sergeant Michael Nick, was in critical condition when crews arrived at the scene.

He was transported to a local trauma center where he succumbed to his injuries.

“Sergeant Nick’s impact extended beyond his roles – he was a friend, mentor, and steadfast presence. His smile and support have left an indelible mark on our officers and community,” CPD said.

Sgt. Nick had been with CPD since 1983. He recently retired in March 2023.

Crews were on the scene until 12:19 a.m.
