Repairs on Fort Johnson Road could take days after water main break, town officials say
JAMES ISLAND, S.C. (WCBD) – A stretch of Fort Johnson Road remains closed Monday after a water main break caused a large sinkhole over the weekend.
Multiple agencies and work crews responded to the area of Fort Johnson Rd. and Jefford Street early Saturday morning after a valve blew in a water transmission line, according to officials with the Town of James Island.
The roadway was significantly flooded, and a tree collapsed into the sinkhole.
Town officials say it will take several days before repairs are completed and the roads are repaved for travel.
“Repairs to the broken water transmission line on Fort Johnson and Jeffords near Folly are extensive and likely to be complicated by expected rain,” the town said in an update Sunday. “It is likely Fort Johnson will be closed for at least several more days while all repairs are completed.”
Dominion Energy was called to the scene to monitor a nearby gas line. Charleston Water System was able to re-route the waterline to ensure there would not be a disruption in service for residents.
Detours are in place.
