Deputies with the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) initially responded to a call regarding a vehicle fire on Koester Road on April 13. Once flames were extinguished, a body was found inside.
The Charleston County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 20-year-old Omarion Brown, and his death was deemed a homicide. Deputies later arrested Brandon Steplight, 19, on a charge of arson in the first degree and destruction or removal of human remains.
An autopsy found two bullets still in Brown’s chest area and no smoke damage in the lungs, indicating that Brown was dead before he was set on fire.
Video evidence collected by CCSO initially connected Steplight with the burned vehicle.
