Parents express concerns about gas station being constructed near Nexton school
SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCBD) – Some parents are sharing concerns about a business that is being built near their child’s school in the Nexton community.
Parents Nick Schiavone and Taylor Hart are just two of several parents who are not keen on the idea of a 7-Eleven gas station being constructed across the street from Nexton Elementary School.
“You’re taking 300-ish feet from the middle of this tree line … to the front of the building, which is going to be about 100 yards. So you’re talking about a football field,” said Schaivone. “Gas stations are what they are. They don’t always bring the most wanted individuals into a specific area.”
“Concerns over it’s a 24-hour business, loitering, certainly alcohol sales in a proximity this close to schools, and just the lack of community awareness and community outreach,” said Hart.
The land is already being cleared in a wooded area by the property. The two fathers say they would at least like a wood barrier to remain on the property.
“A 10-15 foot buffer where they kept the native trees to at least give us a semblance of separation from the school to the gas station,” said Hart.
News 2 reached out to 7-Eleven but they have not responded. A representative of the Nexton Community Association did not provide comment on the issue.
