NAACP to host meeting with CCSD Superintendent Thursday

CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – Charleston County School District Superintendent Anita Huggins will answer questions from the public at an NAACP meeting held in downtown Charleston on Thursday.

Leaders with the organization said they are preparing to ask a range of questions on topics from funding to suspension rates.

Other leaders from the school district will be in attendance for the meeting, like the CCSD’s Chief Academic Officer, Michelle Simmons. NAACP officials say they’re eager to hear from Simmons on issues surrounding the curriculum and certain book bans within the district.

Anyone in attendance at Thursday’s meeting will have the chance to write their questions down which will be collected and asked to both Huggins and Simmons.

NAACP leaders say they’re hoping to hear what changes the CCSD leaders could bring to the school district, as they’ve already talked to Superintendent Huggins ahead of this meeting on ways to help minority students receive the funding they need.

NAACP’s Charleston branch president Dorothy Jenkins wants to remind folks that their meeting is open to the public as she encourages the community to come on Thursday.

“Knowledge is power, and the only way we can move forward is if we have the information necessary in order to function as an effective unit, the more people there the better. And we encourage any and everyone, it’s not just for NAACP members, but for the community to hear what our superintendent has to say at this time and how she plans to proceed to go forward,” said Jenkins.

Thursday’s meeting is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. at Mother Emanuel.
