Man dies after igniting firework on head, coroner says

DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – The Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office has reported an accidental death from fireworks in a Summerville neighborhood Thursday night

Deputies responded around 10:23 p.m. to the 100 block of Cottonwood Drive in the Crestwood Subdivision.

Officials say upon arrival they located a man lying in the roadway of Cotton Drive suffering from major injuries.

Deputies say witnesses attributed the injuries to a fireworks accident.

The Dorchester County Coroner’s Office has identified Allen Ray McGrew, 41, as the person killed in the fireworks incident.

According to Dorchester County Corner, Paul J. Brouthers, McGrew ignited a large firework device and set it on his head in the street. The device exploded while on top of his head causing massive head injuries.

Officials say McGrew was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:30 p.m. by the coroner.

Detectives and Crime Scene investigators are currently investigating the incident.
