Groundbreaking planned Friday for reconstruction of Georgetown County airport runway
GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) β A groundbreaking ceremony is planned Friday to reconstruct a Georgetown County Airport runway.
County officials, airport staff, and project partners will attend the celebration of the refurbishment project for Runway 11/29, a secondary runway.
Secondary runways are not typically eligible for FAA funding, which often means most are in poor condition. Runway 11/29 has not been resurfaced since it was installed in 1942.
A program was created to provide funding for projects like this through state support.
“The leadership at the state Aeronautics Commission recognized this as a safety issue and created a new program that would allow 90% of projects to be funded through state support, making it feasible for local governments to complete these projects,” said Georgetown County Airport Manager Jim Taylor.
Runway 11/29 will be the first secondary runway in the state to take advantage of this new program.
The major project will help enhance safety and operational capabilities at the countyβs airport.
The groundbreaking will be held at 1 p.m.
