Greek Festival celebrates last day of weekend festivites

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD)- The Greek Festival will wrap up today.

Thousands of people came to the festival this weekend, enjoying all the vendors, Greek food, and dancing.

June Katsoulakis and her family have been involved in Charleston’s Greek Festival since she was 7 years old, and this year is no different.

“My husband works the gyro booth, my son is doing DJ with the band. All three kids dance, my daughter is helping teach the dances, and I just do whatever needs to be done, mainly helping the kids with dancing,” Katsoulakis said.

Katsoulakis says they love to be a big part of the festival, “It’s our heritage, it’s our culture, it’s our religion, we love it and we love this church.”

The church that hosts the festival, Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity, gives a lot of the money made to different charities in the Lowcountry.

Katsoulkis says each volunteer you see at the festival is a church member.

“This is the only Greek Orthodox church around here and most of the members here have been here since the church opened in the 50’s, generation after generation,” Katsoulakis said.

It’s something church members like Paula Anastopoulo look forward to every year, and being able to share Greek culture with the Lowcountry, especially the Greek food.

“We’ve got everything you want. Gyro, Loukoumades, which is the fried donuts, we’ve got Baklava ice cream. It’s all good you can’t go wrong.” Anastopoulo said.
