Georgetown County standoff ends peacefully after nearly five hours, sheriff says
GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A person was taken into custody Monday night after a nearly five-hour standoff on Waverly Road in the Pawleys Island area, Sheriff Carter Weaver said.
The Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office issued a statement just before 7:30 p.m. saying a man barricaded himself in a residence on St. Christopher Circle.
Deputies asked people to avoid the area. Neighbors told a News13 reporter that the incident began at about 1 p.m.
At least 10 law enforcement vehicles and multiple officers with rifles in the area, including members of what appeared to be a SWAT team. Officers have also heard yelling on a loudspeaker every three to five minutes, and medical units were set up at Waccamaw Elementary School.
Authorities have also shut down Waverly Road between Pedigru Drive and Martin Luther King Road.
The barricaded subject will undergo a mental health evaluation to determine any further action, officials said.
