Fort Dorchester grad Jasmine Camacho-Quinn to carry Puerto Rico’s flag during Paris Olympics opening ceremony

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Jasmine Camacho-Quinn, a North Charleston native and Fort Dorchester High School graduate, has been selected as a flag bearer for Puerto Rico during the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics later this month.

Although she’s a Lowcountry native, Camacho-Quinn will represent her mother’s home country in the women’s 100-meter hurdles.

The athlete brought home a gold medal during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after completing her record run in 12.26 seconds. She is the second athlete to earn a gold medal for the country during the Olympic Games, according to the Puerto Rico Olympic Committee (COPUR).

Camacho-Quinn told the committee in June that she was excited to have been chosen as Puerto Rico’s flag bearer for the upcoming games and added that she hoped to use her talent to bring another gold medal back to the island.

She made her Olympic debut during the Rio Games in 2016, during which she clipped a hurdle in the semifinals and lost her chances at winning a medal.

Camacho-Quinn began her track career at Fort Dorchester High School before attending the University of Kentucky where she continued.

The first round of the women’s 100-meter hurdles competition will take place on August 7, followed by the semi-final on August 9 and the final on August 10.
