Family rescued amid French Quarter Creek flash flooding, deputies say

HUGER, S.C. (WCBD) – A family was rescued Tuesday afternoon after a Huger community creek flash flooded following heavy rainfall from Tropical Storm Debby.

The National Weather Service warned residents to take action after French Quarter Creek reached a major flood stage shortly after 4 p.m. The creek rose about a foot within six hours.

Berkeley County Emergency Operations received the call for help around 5:30 p.m., according to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office. A swiftwater crew was dispatched and rescued the individuals.

No other families were rescued. In 2015, the U.S. Coast Guard was called to rescue stranded individuals from their rooftops due to heavy flooding in the area.

French Quarter Creek Road will remain flooded, and some sections of the road could be under a foot or more of water, making the road impassable, according to Storm Team 2 Meteorologist Jed Christoph.

The sheriff’s office said rescuers will continue to monitor the area. As of 9:04 p.m. Tuesday, family members were performing boat rescues for those still stuck in homes along the creek.
