Colleton County deputies still investigating drive-by shooting that critically injured young boy

WALTERBORO, S.C. (WCBD) – Authorities in Colleton County are still seeking information about a drive-by shooting that left an 8-year-old boy critically injured last month.

Colleton County Sheriff’s Office officials said the child suffered a life-threatening gunshot wound to the head during a June 1 shooting near Burlington Road.

The sheriff’s office has interviewed several witnesses, but they said those individuals are being uncooperative with investigators. “Without witness cooperation, this case could be more challenging to resolve,” the department said.

Earlier information provided by emergency crews said the child went into cardiac arrest while being taken to a local hospital. First responders caught up with the vehicle and resuscitated the child in the middle of the roadway. They said he regained a heartbeat and began breathing on his own.

The child was stabilized at Colleton Medical Center and then flown to the children’s trauma center at the Medical University of South Carolina still in critical condition.

An investigation into the near-deadly shooting revealed the suspect vehicle was likely parked near a Christmas tree farm on Burlington Road while waiting on the victim’s car.

A specific vehicle description was not provided but detectives said they found clues on a grassy shoulder. “Our investigation has determined this was not a random act of violence but a targeted attack on a specific vehicle,” the sheriff’s office said at the time.
