City of Folly Beach adopts hate crime resolution

FOLLY BEACH, S.C. (WCBD) — The City of Folly Beach joined a growing number of Lowcountry municipalities this week to pass a hate crimes resolution for their community.

Folly Beach City Council unanimously passed a resolution reaffirming the city’s commitment to unite against acts of hate, bias, and intimidation. Charleston, Mount Pleasant, Summerville, and North Charleston have passed their own hate crime ordinances recently.

Folly Beach City Councilwoman Katherine Houghton says the resolution will connect to existing ordinances.

“The timing was right. One of the things that made me particularly proud is that we were able to pass it in June, which is a time when we celebrate Juneteenth, we celebrate pride month, and things of that nature, so it was perfect,” Houghton said.

South Carolina remains one of two states in the US without a hate crimes law.
