LOCK IT OR LOSE IT: North Charleston police warn of vehicle break-ins

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Authorities in North Charleston are reminding residents to lock their vehicles to prevent theft.

The North Charleston Police Department has placed mobile billboards throughout the city reminding people to lock up amid an uptick in vehicle break-ins.

In a crime status update shared on the department’s Facebook page, North Charleston police noted that vehicle break-in crimes increased by 12% in February; however, they noted that the number of stolen vehicles decreased by 37%.

“Please lock your cars and don’t leave your guns inside them,” the agency said. “We thank you.”

An unlocked vehicle is tempting for criminals. They said thieves will enter the vehicle and rummage through it to search for valuable items. “Locking your doors will often make thieves move onto an easier target,” the department said. “Make sure your windows and doors are closed and locked anytime you leave your vehicle.”

Do not leave valuables inside your vehicle, especially in plain sight, and never leave a firearm unattended in your vehicle.

Never leave your key or fob in your vehicle. Thieves will often pull door handles and take what can be easily carried. “Finding a key, in an unsecured vehicle, is a criminal’s dream and allows them to steal the car,” police said.

Police add that you should never leave your car unattended while running. “It takes less than 10 seconds for a thief to enter in and leave with your vehicle,” NCPD added. “If you’re in the habit of doing this, the likelihood of your vehicle being stolen will increase. It’s just a matter of time.”
