Several dogs perish in Colleton County mobile home fire; space heater may be cause
COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – A space heater might be the blame for a Thursday morning mobile home fire that killed several dogs.
A passerby called 911 around 11 a.m. to report a home at the corner of Camp Buddy Road and Garner Corners Court was on fire.
Officials with Colleton County Fire Rescue said the caller told dispatchers that there were flames coming from the windows and roof.
“The roof over half of the home and a portion of the front wall had already burned away. Firefighter-paramedics deployed multiple handlines to the building. A vehicle was in front of the home and neighbors could not verify that no one was there,” said fire rescue officials.
Crews spent several minutes knocking down the flames until they could enter the single-wide mobile home to search for anyone inside. While no one was found in the home, officials say several dogs died in the fire.
Firefighters were on the scene for three hours. The agency believes the fire started after a space heater was left running. They said the family lost most of their belongings.
