Bumpy road in Sangaree could finally be paved

SANGAREE, S.C. (WCBD) – A problematic road in Berkeley County will soon be paved.

Drivers say the road in Sangaree, which runs between Beauregard Road and the Food Lion, is bumpy and dangerous.

“I do a lot of bobbing and weaving,” said Jessica Franklin, who works next to the road. “My car has bottomed out, especially once you get up a little bit further- there are some big holes in there. I scraped it, doesn’t matter how slow you go, you’re gonna hit it.”

Franklin works at the animal hospital which backs up to the road.

Berkeley County said the road is not a traditional road owned by the South Carolina Department of Transportation; however, it is considered a roadway access easement called Beauregard Extension.

“People go really fast down here as well,” Franklin added.

It has been a dirt and rock pothole-filled road for years. We previously reported on a firetruck that got stuck in a massive pothole in the road about four years ago. That led to concerns the condition could impact emergency responses.

Berkeley County officially took the road over on September 9th of this year. They listed it as an American Rescue Plan Act, or ARPA Dirt-to-Pave project. County council will be discussing the project this Tuesday.

The road will be redesigned and then paved. For now, the project is getting ready to go into the design phase. There is no word on when project work will begin or when it should be completed.
