Restaurateurs opening Brooklyn-Italian spot along Morrison Drive

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A Brooklyn-Italian-inspired restaurant is set to open in the space formerly occupied by Butcher and Bee along Morrison Drive next spring.

Pelato, created by New York native and restaurateur Anthony Scotto Jr. and his family, will feature Italian dishes passed down for generations.

The Scotto family recently opened the first Pelato in Nashville and decided to invest further in the Holy City spot after its success.

Some of the family recipes diners can expect to see are potato croquettes, Brooklyn-style calamari, chicken parmigiana, radiator vodka pasta, and bucatini cacao e pepe.

Restaurant owners say they will also introduce new menu items utilizing Charleston’s local produce and seafood.

One tradition that will stick at the Charleston location is “Sunday Sauce,” which is a collection of meats cooked overnight served with Fusilli pasta and served during dinner only.

Until the opening, local architect David Thompson will work alongside Scotto’s daughter Gabriella to curate Pelato. The space is set to hold 180 patrons through its main dining room, bar seating, private dining room, and outdoor patio.

The family said a mural showcasing their Brooklyn roots through original photos will also be a standout design element.

“We’ve been making our way south for years now and are proud to call it our home,” said Theresa Scotto. “The people here feel like family, and we’re excited to bring a real taste of Brooklyn to one of our favorite cities.”
