USA Women Secures Top Seed with Dominant Win Over Germany in Group Phase Finale
The USA women’s basketball team continued its dominance at the Olympics with an 87-68 victory over Germany in the Group Phase finale on Sunday. Both teams had already secured their spots in the quarterfinals, but the Americans’ win ensured an unblemished 3-0 record in Group C and extended their Olympic win streak to 58 consecutive games.
Jackie Young led a dominant effort from the USA bench, scoring 19 points, including five three-pointers, four rebounds, and four steals. Young, who had only scored seven points in the first two Olympics games, exploded offensively to help secure the victory.
The depth of the USA squad shined, with the bench outscoring Germany’s reserves 52-13. Kahleah Copper contributed nine points, while Kelsey Plum, Sabrina Ionescu, Alyssa Thomas, and Brittney Griner each added six points.
Germany started strong, with Leonie Fiebich and Satou Sabally combining for 13 points and three three-pointers, helping the Germans jump out to a 15-6 lead. However, the USA quickly responded, cutting the lead to three by the end of the first quarter and dominating the second quarter 25-10 to take a 12-point lead at halftime. Young capped off a strong third quarter with a buzzer-beating three-pointer, putting the Americans up by 23.
Defensively, the USA forced 23 turnovers and 12 steals, converting those mistakes into 21 points. Key plays included Plum’s backcourt steal and dish to Thomas for a layup, and Wilson’s steal leading to Plum’s coast-to-coast and-1.
The Americans matched their three-point output from the first two games, hitting nine threes on 42.9% shooting. Young led the way with five threes, while Copper added three off the bench.
With this win, the USA enters the Knockout Phase as the top seed, poised for continued success in their quest for Olympic gold.
