Debby drops heavy rain as bands sweep through Lowcountry; breaking record rainfall totals

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Storm Team 2 is still actively tracking Tropical Storm Debby as its outer bands of heavy rainfall impact the Lowcountry.

New Tuesday morning, Storm Team 2 reports 4-12 inches of rain has fallen since Monday morning. Tornado and wind damage has occurred overnight impacting the Lowcountry area, and more heavy rain is expected today.

There is a Flash flood warning for Colleton, Dorchester, Charleston and some of Berkeley County.

Another band of heavy rain is approaching the Charleston metro and is expected to hit around sunrise, according to meteorologist Josh Marthers.

“Light to moderate rain is falling but as we move through the day more and more is going to develop, and we’re going to see pretty heavy rain starting out this morning and lasting through the middle part of the day. Then in the afternoon it breaks up a bit and becomes a little more sporadic,” says Marthers.

An additional 6-10 inches of rain is expected with some areas having over 10 inches of rainfall.

“This is on top of what we’ve already received. We think the storm total is going to be 10-20 with some 20 inches plus. Which looks like we’re right on target to hit that number,” Marthers added.

Meteorologist Grace Lowe says rainfall records were broken at the airport on Monday. The old record was 1.78 inches which was set in 1941, Monday’s total is 4.71 inches.
