SLED asked to investigate inmate death at Charleston County jail
CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – State police have been asked to investigate an inmate’s death at the Al Cannon Detention Center.
Deputies responded to the Charleston County jail around 6:30 p.m. for what the sheriff’s office said was an apparent natural death.
An unresponsive man was found alone in his cell.
“In addition to deputies and medical staff, North Charleston Fire Department personnel and EMS attempted life-saving measures on the resident but were unsuccessful,” said Alexis Douglas, a spokesperson for the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.
The inmate was pronounced dead at the jail. Their name has not yet been released.
Sheriff Kristin Graziano has asked the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) to investigate and the department’s Office of Professional is conducting an internal review.
