Everyday Heroes: A super assistance agent

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD)— Our Everyday Hero is a man who spent over thirty years on King Street making sure people looked sharp. Now, he’s at Charleston International Airport, ensuring people get to where they need to be on time.

William Fowler spent 31 years at Ruben’s Menswear in downtown Charleston. Nowadays, you can find Fowler at Charleston International Airport.

“I’ve been doing this for five years and this is something I really really like,” Fowler said.

Technically, he is a passenger assistance agent who helps people who cannot get to where they need to be by themselves.

“Well, see, people really appreciate it, and they look forward to it; when they get off the plane, and we are standing there with the wheelchairs waiting on them, they are very happy,” Fowler explained.

It sounds simple, but it is the extra work and dedication that makes Fowlers an airport favorite.

“I like putting a smile on people’s faces and everything, and they put a smile on mine,” he said.

Coworkers use words like dedicated and dependable to describe the 72-year-old. Fowler got the job after his grandson worked at Charleston International and said it would be a perfect fit for him.

“Nobody ever thought I would do something like this. I have some friends who just come up here to see and say I can’t believe you’re doing this, and I say, man, I like it,” Fowler said.

They say it’s not work if you love what you do, and Mr. Fowler says he is happy to be here. People flying in and out of airports aren’t always in the best of moods, so Fowler makes sure they know that he’s got them covered.

“It’s not all about the money with me because I like doing this; I like doing it because it makes me feel good by helping someone you know, and people really need help,” he explained.

Mr. Fowler says he will even go outside the airport to make sure people get into the right rideshare vehicle.
