CELEBRATE WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH

Who Run the World?!!!

Women’s History Month had its origins as a national celebration in 1981 when Congress passed Pub. L. 97-28 which authorized and requested the President to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982 as “Women’s History Week.” Throughout the next five years, Congress continued to pass joint resolutions designating a week in March as “Women’s History Week.” In 1987 after being petitioned by the National Women’s History Project, Congress passed Pub. L. 100-9 which designated the month of March 1987 as “Women’s History Month.”

Women’s History Month is a dedicated month to reflect on the often-overlooked contributions of women to United States history. From Abigail Adams to Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth to Rosa Parks, the timeline of women’s history milestones stretches back to the founding of the United States.

March 31 – Ibtihaj Muhammad

Olympic fencer, activist.   During the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics, Muhammad became the first American woman to wear a hijab while competing at the games and win a bronze medal. She’s also a five-time Senior World medalist and World Champion. And in 2017, Mattel produced their first hijab-wearing Barbie, created in Muhammad’s likeness.

March 30 – Susan Rice

Diplomat, policy advisor, politician.   During the Barack Obama administration, Rice was the first Black woman to serve as the U.S. representative to the United Nations. March 29 – Venus & Serena Williams

Professional tennis players.  The sisters are incredibly decorated athletes, with 122 combined career singles titles and a total of nine Olympic medals between the two of them. Serena, 39, is the first tennis player to win 23 Grand Slam titles and has won more than $88 million in prize money—the highest of any female athlete.

March 28 – Stacey Abrams

Politician, lawyer, novelist.  Abrams earned herself an endorsement from Oprah during her campaign to become Georgia’s new governor in 2018. (She would have been the first Black woman to step into the role.) March 27 – Beyonce Knowles-Carter

Singer, songwriter, entertainer, actress, entrepreneur.  Known to her loyal fanbase as Queen B, Knowles-Carter is arguably one of the best entertainers of our time.
